BMX Euros 22-23 April 2006 | Report and pics, Billy Wright

Saturday: Euro round one at St Mesmin, France

Fourteen of Britain's finest set out to battle for honours at the first round of the European Cup and Championship of BMX.

Team GB plus Skye and Spencer Beagley, Reece Hoggatt, Ryan Stack, Curtis Manaton and Bradley Minns made the trip south. The brothers Beagley did well and Skye just missed out on qualification by two points. Things looked much better for the experienced UK riders that rode in the 11/12 BOYS. Ryan stack and Bradley Minns went through in the same style that they did earlier in the year at Tours.

Motos
Junior Women. Shanaze Reade was our sole representative and went about her work in a very business like manor with maximum points in the Motos.

Junior Men. Chris Jackson, Lewis Lacey and Liam Phillips (pictured above) were the UK riders who all rode with distinction. Liam took maximum points and Chris Jackson rode out of his skin to make it to the next round. There was no such luck for Lewis Lacey as he went out, just missing qualification by one point.

Elite Men. Kelvin Batey, Liam Batey, Marcus Bloomfield, Luke Gamble and Laurence Mapp were representing Team GB and looked very Professional. Half the team made it though to the next round, which is definitely ground for building on through the year. Liam Batey was the unfortunate man to miss out with a score of 17 points, which was just one to many.

1/8 Finals
Ryan Stack took a very nice 3rd spot to move into the quarters and looked comfortable, but Reece Hoggatt had a hard time and came home in 8th. Meanwhile in the Elite Men's class there was shock and horror as Marcus Bloomfield missed his race having thought that there were no quarters for Elite Men. Kelvin Batey kept the British end up with a solid ride to pull though in 3rd.

Quarter Finals
Ryan stack had a gruelling time in his quarter main as he had a bad gate, so played catch up but could only claim 7th still a fair performance. Chris Jackson rode himself to 6th in his race while Liam Phillips crossed the line first to keep his winning streak going in the Junior Men. Kelvin Batey rode a hard tactical race and in doing so clamed the 4th spot to make it to the Semis.

Semi Finals

Junior Women came to the party at this stage with some of the best racing of the day. Shanaze Reade took her semi final race out with another one of her thumping holeshots to keep a perfect record going. Liam Phillips came home second. A blip on what was a perfect score up until then. In Elite, Kelvin also took a second spot in what looked to me as his best race of the day.

Mains
Shanaze looked to have it all tagged and bagged after a super gate but heartbreak was to follow as a slipped peddle moved her back to second place where she was to finish. Liam Phillips charged out of the gate, well knowing that if he could make it to the first turn in front then he would have a chance. He nearly made it getting there in second and he rode like mad, but could not take the win from Dutch sensation MARTIJN SCHERPEN. Coming home in 2nd is still a great result. Kelvin Batey (pictured above) was well happy to make it and was determined to make it count. All the big names were there but that did not bother him. When the gate dropped and the mad dash was in progress, he must have been in shock when he got to the first turn in 2nd. He rode for his life to hold on for a well-earned 4th place behind THOMAS HARMON and FLORENT BOUTTE of France. He slept well on the Saturday night knowing that he's got it all again on Sunday.

Sunday: Round two; Euro Cup St Mesmin.
The second day of racing started with a good vibe, as Curtis Manaton went first off the gate for the GB crew and placed 3rd in his opening Moto. As the heats progressed, it was clear to see that it was going to be a hard day for some. Luke Gamble who was making his pro debut did not have a single piece of good luck his way. Tough heats and a miss-timed gate made it a more than mammoth task for him, but a little more time and experience should see Luke move on to great things. Lewis Lacey was hanging tough only to miss out due to a fifth place in his last Moto. It was not all doom and gloom as Kelvin Batey. Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips give a super show in the wet on demonstrated how to qualify. POWER. PATIENCE and EXPERIENCE. Then there was Marcus Bloomfield, a man on a mission to make up for the miss giving's of the previous day. Marcus rode with power and control to make it to the round of 1/8ths.

1/8 Finals
Curtis Manaton had a good weekend, but that was about to end here. Knowing Curtis, I'm sure he cannot wait until next week's first national. Liam Phillips was really starting to like this place as he stomped home 2nd in his qualifier. Chris Jackson also rode with pride, but from an outside gate it was a near impossible task to pass and placed a very unlucky 5th. Kelvin Batey went though with a class ride in 2nd. Shanaze Reade was getting it together with a trademark holeshot to tape win. Marcus Bloomfield had the gate of the day by his standards but could not get across and had to settle for 3rd.to make it to the quarters.

Shanaze Reade - on fire all weekend

Quarter Finals
Things went fine on the gate for Liam, but he had to fight it out berm warfare style to make his point and still managed to score 3rd place and advance to the Semis. Marcus Bloomfield had work to do and little time to do it if he was to make the semis. Achieving this from an outside gate made it difficult, but he almost made it and placed unlucky number 5. Kelvin on the other hand had to pass a downed rider on his way to a last straight dash for the line was he just fell short and missed out on making the Semis. Shanaze Reade continued her unbeaten run to make it though in style.

Semi finals.
Liam Phillips led the GB challenge of with good intentions only to sadly get caught up in a three-man pile up that put him back in 6th place. Shanaze was starting to love this place as she made it home sweetly to take her place in the main unbeaten.

Finals
The Junior Men win went to local hot shot MOANA MOO CAILLE with ROY Van Den BERG of the Netherlands in second place. Junior Women had us all shouting hard for Shanaze Reade who proudly returned our shouts with the gate of the day to win by yards, which evened the score with LIEKE KLAUS of Holland who came home 2nd. The Elite Women win went to the French sensation that is LAETITIA LE CORGUILLE. Samantha Cools made the trip over form Canada but could only place 3rd. Elite Men had PABLO GUTIERREZ to thank for a great race that was so wide open. IVO LAKUCS of Latvia placed second with HENRIK BALTZERSEN of Denmark taking the last spot on the podium.

Skating

Legs 2 & 3 of the Natural Born Skaters Tour took place this weekend in two of the countries leading skate parks, with the UK's top kids all showing up to take part and claim their place in the grand final at Blackpool's Ramp City on 20th May, next month.

The first stop on Saturday was at the Works Skate Park, touted as the best indoor park in the country, so an awesome venue for the Natural Born Skaters Tour. Leeds also has a large skate community so the standard is generally very high!

The comp kicked off at 3 with jam format qualifiers for both the men's and U'16's. Early standouts included Thompson Marshall and Benji Rose in the Men's event with Josh Zajag and Richie Mann making an impression in the U'16's jam heats.

However, the timed runs final is where the pressure comes in and the skater's consistency is really tested! It is here where the guys really show what they are made of! Starting with the U'16's Ross Zajag took third, Judah Thompson got second and St Helens' Joe Mcguffog took his second win of the Tour. Come on Joe, give the others a chance! In the men's event early standout Thompson Marshall took 3rd place narrowly out pointed by Joe Winn in second but it was the local knowledge of Josh 'Manhead' Young that proved too good for the rest! Josh was super smooth with everything he tried including backside 180's and kickflips over the hip and a range of rail tricks! Congratulations all of you, we'll see you at the final at Ramp City! Before the crew upped and left Leeds there was just time for best trick on three obstacles! First up was the big block where Joe Mcguffog took home the goods with a nose slide. Living la vida loca, Ricky Martin nailed the big hip with a big bs flip back to back with a big fs flip and the final piece of gold came from Joe Winn with a tre flip to lip slide on the down rail! Nice work fella's!

On Sunday the crew, including the UKSA, made their way over to Bolton and Bones Skatepark for leg 3. Again this is a great park with a large street section for the skaters to perform. All the Bolton locals were showing their knowledge of the course with lines that some of the travelling competitors were yet to work out. However, after watching for a while the 'foreigners' stepped up and brought in a few lines of their own! In the U'16's Joe Mcguffog was once again showing how he has won the previous two legs while the local Josh Parr consistently destroyed the course with some crazy tricks. The highlight was probably his backside boardslide to revert on the main extension. It was tricks like this that gave Josh 'ASBO' Parr the win followed by Jack Morris and Joe Mcguffog. Due to Joe's previous qualification Jamie Hibbert was given entry to the final following his forth place finish. The Men's final was next and Stockport qualifier Adam Hardman was going off. Huge airs off the quarter to flat bank and back and frontside boardslides down the main rail earned him first place. Chris Ault from Kent was second with some really stylish skating including crailslides and tuck knee airs over the spine. The final qualifying spot of the weekend was taken by Jake Goodfellow whose skills on the down rail were insane, bluntslides, feeble grind and boardslides were made to look easy. The final comp of the day was in the bowl with mini TNT, Rick Fields taking 3rd, Chris Ault taking another second place and Josh Parr taking the win. Too many blunts to mention, ASBO is sick. Well done you lot, once again, see you in Blackpool!

The dates and tour venues are as follows:

Leg 1 - Bones Skate Park, Stockport - completed
Leg 2 - The Works Skate Park, Leeds - completed
Leg 3 - Bones Skate Park, Bolton - completed
Final - Ramp City Skate Park, Blackpool - 20/5/06
